Documentary Analysis

Documentary- Dispatches: Mark Thomas on Coca Cola

Documentary Maker: Mark Thomas

Mark Thomas's documentary is on the Coca Cola Company is made and it's purpose of the documentary is to raise awareness what Coca Cola does, the issues and accussations Coca Cola faces such as the water shortages, Safety of the workers and child labour. The audience Mark Thomas is aiming this documentary at is the whole publice nationwide as well as an international audience.

Mark Thomas presents Coca Cola in a negative way as he only shows images and captions that will portray the Coca Cola Company in a negative way and create a bad image of the company. He uses a wide range of techniques such as , the voice of god, editing, iamges and captions.

For example, Thomas uses the voice of god to minipulate the audience into thinking that his point is the right point and that they should believe what he presents in the documentary. This is shown in when Mark Thomas explain how Coca Cola bottlers tap the underground water supplys that the local population use on a day to day basis and also the water supply that they rely on, to have access of the water supplys to use these supplys to produce their product.

Mark Thomas also uses images that create a bad image of the comapny. This is shown in the documentary of an image of columbian workers floating in a giant glass of Coca Cola, with the heading "Columbian Coke Float" also with the caption of " Un-thinkable, Undrinkable" located at the bottom of the glass.

Mark Thomas shows only his opinion and his side of what he thinks of what Coca Cola are doing, this shows how thiis documantary is biased as it only shows one persons point of view about the issue and no-one elses.

My Research on Boyz In The Hood and City Of God.

The Two films that I have chosen to research about are Boyz In The Hood and City Of God.
Boyz In The Hood:

Boyz In The Hood was first released in the summer of 1991 on 12th July. The film was directed and written by John Singleton. Boyz In The Hood actors and actresses both fitted and played their roles well. The cast were Rapper Ice Cube who played Darin 'Doughboy' Baker, Morris Chestnut who played 'Ricky Baker', Cuba Gooding Jr playing 'Tre Styles', Nia Long playing'Brandi' and Angela Bassett who played 'Reva Devereaux'.

The Storyline behind Boyz In The Hood is about a group of African- American childhood friends, who grow up in a ghetto hood located in South Central L.A. Throughout the film you see the struggle they go through to escape from the violence and drugs they are surrounded by in their everyday life. All three have different ambitions they want to pursue and achieve.

Boyz In The Hood has a hybrid genre as it is captured as a crime/urban drama/gangsta hood film genre. The film captures everyday issues that happen in Ghetto neighbourhoods involving gang rivals.

City Of God:

City Of God was first released on the 3rd January, 2003. The film was directed by Fernando Meirelles and his co-director Katia Lund. The film was written by by Braulio Mantovani. City Of God was adapted from the Novel written by Paulo Lin's.

The film City Of God has a large Cast of actors and actresses, naming a few:

  • Leandro Firmino da Hora as Lil ZE

  • Phellipe Haagensen as Benny

  • Douglas Silva as Lil Dice

  • Seu Jorge as Knockout Ned

  • Alice Braga as Angelica

  • Roberta Rodriguez as Bernice

  • Alexandre Rodriguez as Rocket

Most of the actors and actresses in this film have never acted before and were in fact residents of City Of God itself in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

The storyline of City Of God:

City Of God is an intense and passionate film. The film is about two teenage boys living and growing up in a violent environment in Rio De Janeiro. They both take different paths as one goes to become a photographer and the other turns to the drug dealing business. Throughout the film there are flashbacks of the boys in their childhood seeing what they go through on a day to day basis and explains each characters role and why they became the person that they are now. The film captures drug abuse, violent crimes and a boy tyring to free himself from the slums strong hold.

The tag line for City Of God is ..."Fight and you'll never survive... Run and you'll never escape."
